Intro to Zen 4 week series Mondays 7:30pm - 8:30pm Lead by Brian LaVoie Zen was born of Yogic practices in India, grew up China, matured in Japan, and more recently moved to the West. If Yoga is meditation in motion, then Zen is meditation in stillness. In this class we’ll explore the practice of mindfulness in ritual, chant and meditation, and along the way talk a little about Buddhism’s development, goals and techniques. This is equally a true introductory and also educational experience of the art of traditional Zazen seated meditation. You do not have to have any prior Zen or meditation experience, nor be able to sit still, sit on the floor or seat cross legged. Chairs and meditation cushions will be provided to be comfortable. Although this is offered as a beginner friendly offering, if you are a seasoned meditator and are looking to sit with a group, this is a great opportunity to share the practice and community. Brian will be explaining all the traditional customs, history and philosophy behind this ancient and revered practice. It is an absolute honor to be able to offer this to the community! The early classes would include more guidance and comments on the 'forms' (bowing, meditating, chanting, etc.), the later classes would be less talking and more seated practice. Brian LaVoie is a 25-year Zen practitioner and a student of Jim Nowik of TreeTop Zendo in the White Plum lineage. He lives in Trumbull with his wife, son, a tortoise and 2 very needy cats.
